A MAAC membership is required for all pilots when flying in Canada.
The former mutual agreement between MAAC and the AMA is no longer in effect because of changes in Canada’s flying regulations.
There have been a number of Federal regulatory changes in the past few years, that impact on the requirements, related to flying Remotely Piloted Aerial Systems (RPAS).
The various elements are explained in the MAAC document MPPD 14. The link to MPPD 14 is at:

If you are new to MAAC, and your permanent home address is not in Canada, you have two options to join MAAC:
If you are renewing your existing membership, or you are a former member, please sign in to your account with your MAAC # to complete a membership renewal form. If you don't remember your MAAC #, please contact our office for assistance.
