MAAC members fly a wide range of models, from the Free Flight and Control Line models that initially formed the hobby up to Giant models and technology filled helicopters. Each category has its unique challenges and rewards, giving a home for just about everyone interested in flying models.
These models represent the origins of the hobby, and are still enjoyed by members today. Free Flight models are exactly like they sound, but through the skill of the builder, and the adjustments made by the flyer, they are more controlled than they sound. From racing to combat to aerobatics, control line offers more challenges than you’d think. Control Line models are tethered to the pilot and fly in circles, but offer a vast range of activities and manoeuvres.
Most of our members fly Radio Control models of one type or another. Radio control allows flyers to fully control the model remotely, making the models capable of everything a full-size model can do… and more. The range of models under Radio Control is vast, including traditionally Free Flight models converted to Radio Control up to turbine Jets and everything in between.
Many members enjoy model rockets, where both fun-flying and competition include purpose build rockets, scale rockets, and even radio controlled rocket-assist gliders.
Many modellers are attracted to the hobby with the idea of flying a scale model of a full-size airplane. From warbirds, to jets, to general aviation aircraft, everything you can think of has been built and flown by modellers. You’ll find scale categories in Free Flight, Control Line, and Radio control disciplines.
Members have a long history of flying helicopters of all kinds, including free flight. Technological advances have brought us easy to fly multi-rotors, commonly known as drones.
